Swimming – It’s better than you think

Swimming – it’s better than you think. There are so many benefits to getting in the water to swim. Take your pick, ocean, lake, or swimming pool. There is nothing like submerging yourself from head to toe and swishing around your body during the hot summer months.

Why?

A) It’s a full-body workout – every major muscle is invited to this swim party! @natashavdm81 Director of Triathlon at Austin Aquatics and Sports Academy in Austin, Texas has a few things to say. “Swimming fires up more of your body’s major muscle groups than other forms of cardio exercise. Swimming engages your legs and also recruits your upper body and core. Especially your lats — the muscles of your middle back — and triceps,” she explains. Certain movements like dolphin kicks, flutter kicks, and more can help strengthen your core.

When athletes get injured, they typically turn to swim. It maintains muscle strength and is gentle on joints.

B) The water will keep you cool, which is the #1 priority when it’s really hot outside. This also means you will exercise for much longer in comparison to going for a run or playing a sport outside. After you swim a few vigorous laps, you should wind down your workout. Laying flat on our back and cruising around in the water can also be really relaxing, which makes this kind of workout so desirable.

C) Swimming is ideal for all fitness levels and is suitable for any age. Beginners can take lessons while others can work on their technique. Check out at your local swimming pool or beach and see if swimming lessons are offered. In Toronto, we like @ymcagta, @zodiaccampswim, and @davinasswimhouse.

If swimming outside, don’t forget to put on the sunscreen, especially on your shoulders, chest, and face. The reflection of the water can be brutal to your skin.

Thank you, @zodiaccampswim for the perfect picture
