Me and My So-Called Friends Reviews

Lisa Borden. Author. Owner of Borden Communications.

Now THIS is great teen lit! As a mother of voracious readers, it’s remarkable how few books offer a challenging read, with age-appropriate content, that inspires and encourages young adults. My 13-year-old daughter read this book a second time immediately upon finishing it the first time

Lielle

I read the book first in grade five, but I have read it since, and it never gets boring. I love reading about Lizzie’s struggles and as someone going into high school shortly, she is a very relatable character. When I read it, I never want to put it down!

Rebecca Eckler. Author. Publisher of RE:BOOKS

I initially bought this book for my pre-teen daughter, but I started to read it and couldn’t put it down. This is an impactful portrait of teen life, tackling such an important topic, especially in this day and age. A fresh, engrossing and vital read for all ages

Robins Hebrew Academy

Our students could not put this book down! They could really relate to the characters and stories and found some parts quite humorous. The teacher’s manual really brought out crucial themes from the book and the exercises we were given to do were not only fun and interactive but meaningful. What we found to be very interesting, was that after the program was completed, the level of drama between the students had decreased significantly.

Jerome. D. Diamond Centre

Our students were thoroughly engaged in the story and found it very relatable to all genders. The humorous storyline helped us raise topics that would otherwise be difficult to discuss. The complimentary program book contained fun and engaging exercises that taught the students so much about anxiety, stress and mental health as a whole.

Get Up Reviews

Amy

I absolutely loved this book and highly recommend it! It is a truly wonderful book that addresses wellness in unique and approachable way. I initially picked this up for my teenagers, but quicky discovered that it is a must-read for people of all ages. ‘Get Up’ has been both inspiring and helpful. I particularly love the quotes—wise words that are insightful and thought provoking. The chapters are stand alone and readers can visit and revisit favourite topics and chapters. This book is a gem, and not to be missed. Get it for adolescents or teens and enjoy it with them or enjoy it on your own! Run, don’t walk to pick up this outstanding book!

Sandy

Sometimes – actually most times – teens don’t want advice from their own parents. This book manages to do it all – it’s light, fun, useful and it’s a great way to provide some life lessons without your teen feeling like they’re getting advice!

Marci Warhaft, Author

Fabulous book! So many books focus on our physical OR emotional well-being, but this one offers incredible advice, tools and exercises that empower readers on all levels of well-being. It’s impossible to read this book and not feel less anxious/stressed and more ready to take on the world! Perfect gift for yourself or someone you love.

Yael

The author is open, honest, relatable, and makes the development of a stronger body, a healthier perspective, and a thicker skin something anyone can achieve. Have put it on my tween’s bookshelf, and look forward to her discovering it, finding inspiration, and taking from it what she needs.

Sue.

I really really enjoyed this book! As well as giving me concrete and clear “how-to” examples and lessons, it made me so motivated to exercise again regularly, to do yoga and to meditate. I needed this book so badly and it came at the right time! I love the inspirational quotes and stories! It is advertised for teens, and for all human beings, for ages 11 and up. As an almost 70-year-old woman, I am excited and inspired! Although I haven’t written in the book, it’s good to know that there is a blank page at the end of each chapter for reflections. I’m planning to re-read it as I continue to put some of the lessons into action, and maybe I will write in the book then! Thank you for this amazing book! Love it!

The Most Amazing Department Store Reviews

Michael Leo Donovan Author. Scriptwriter. Writing instructor

The Most Amazing Department Store by Sharon Neiss Arbess is a potpourri of whimsy and wistfulness woven together as seamlessly as the fabrics in a couture dress. A must-read for anyone who can take their emotions straight up

Georgia

Reading “The Most Amazing Department Store,” made me feel like I was transported to the world of 1950s Montreal. Lily and Vivian’s story not only enunciates the social pressures of the time, but demonstrates a deep and lasting friendship, filled with self-discovery and unwavering support and shining a light on the timeless power of female companionship.

Renée

An enjoyable read with a beautiful lesson in friendship. I loved the book even more as it takes place in my hometown of Montreal. Well done

Shauna

This inspiring and thought-provoking book will quickly resonate with readers. I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know these characters and following their relationships through time. The recurring theme of kindness and being true to yourself makes one think of their own friendships and how truly special they can be

Amy Laura Jones Author

Welcome to The Most Amazing Department Store, a place that once you’ve discovered it, you’ll never want to leave–especially once you meet Lilly and Vivian, the young, vivacious heroines of the story. With style, grace, and a wicked sense of humour, these two friends navigate the joys and struggles of being young, Jewish women in the workforce in post-war Montreal. Sharon Neiss Arbess writes with so much warmth and heart, and a keen eye for detail that will make you feel as though you are right there in the middle of Sunderland’s, snacking on one of their mouth-watering cookies while being fitted for a pair of fancy shoes. This is a story about friendship, womanhood, resilience, and finding your place in the world—and the people you want to share it with.

"But enough about me, let's talk about you.... what do you think of me?" - CC Bloom from the movie Beaches

Sharon is a true gem. I have known her for many years in a personal and professional capacity. When she sets her mind to a task, there is no stopping her. She is driven, compassionate, trustworthy, and very organized. She has an entrepreneurial mind set and has developed and run very successful business ventures. We recently collaborated on a Brave the Waves nutrition and fitness workshop, and I was very impressed with her ability to engage middle school youth. I would definitely work with her again!

Lisa Borden

I have had the good fortune to work with Sharon in a consulting capacity, I have collaborated with her on writing projects, and we also share many points of connection, both personally and professionally. Sharon has passion and compassion mixed with the drive and determination to make any project work … and work well. She is a team player with strong leadership and mentorship skills. I believe few possess the unique and valuable combination of insights into mental wellness, writing skills, good heart and goal of teaching coping skills and resilience. If you ever have the opportunity to work with Sharon, consider yourself fortunate!
