What Are My Friends Like?

Have you ever taken a hard look at your social circle and ask yourself what are my friends like? How do they make me feel? Are you able to let your hair down and just be you?

It’s the second week of school for Ontario kids and even though the work hasn’t piled up yet, it may seem like there is a ton of work to do, but we are not talking about those big textbooks and notepads that you just recently cracked open.

Beyond the textbooks

A big chunk of your time at school has nothing to do with academics. It has to do with your friends and we would like to take a moment and evaluate the situation at hand.

Rocky is our favourite movie of all time. There is one scene in the original movie that simply explains the types of friends you can have. Rocky Balboa said to one of his friend’s sister, “You hang out with smart people, you get smart friends. you hang out with Yo-Yo people you get Yo-Yo friends.”

We did say simple and it is – although, it can get complicated. especially if that Yo-Yo person is in your friend group.

Choices

You have two choices. You can be brave and confront this friend. Say something like “Why are you laughing at me whenever I mention my fear of spiders?” or you can slowly walk away from this person and leave the friendship. Very hard to do, we admit, but it is doable with the right support. (a trusted friend or mentor can coach you through it)

As a rule of thumb, try to surround yourself with people who make you feel good about who you are. If you are in a group, try to have a “bodyguard” who you can confide in. That person will have your back no matter what is said publicly.
