The Love of Competition

The love of competition can be such a thrill; however, It’s not for everyone.

Living in Canada has many perks and one of them is that we are able to enjoy four full seasons. Okay, maybe it’s three due to our super-long winters, but that could be a great thing, especially if you love to snowboard!

Once the snow hits the ground, you know where to find the famous Farber twin boys Adam and Jacob Farber. @jacobfarbs @farber88 who are competitive snowboarders. And yes, it is safe to say that they both have the love of competition.

“They would snowboard 24/7 if they could!” explains the mother of these active boys, Jennifer Farber @jjfarbs. “And when they aren’t snowboarding, they are on the tennis court.”

It’s not only on the snow…

Several years ago, Jenn signed up her boys for tennis lessons and they never looked back.  “The boys love the competition and being active. It can cause stress if you are competitive, but that is also a reason they like it as they thrive on the competition. Jacob is his happiest when he is testing his physical limits.” Jenn explains.

Jenn’s perspective on competition and the stress that can follow is an excellent point. As for competition, it is important to learn how to thrive on it such as getting that excited, maybe a bit nervous, slightly fearful but happy feeling. Then there is the wrong kind of stress when it becomes a burden on your body and your life when you feel extremely scared, and there is no joy that comes out of it. Know the difference and know yourself.

There is more than one way to get moving

If a certain sport is not bringing out the best of your abilities, both mentally and physically, try something else that works for you. We are so lucky that we have access to activities at our fingertips and in our neighbourhoods such as yoga, running, golf, hockey swimming and many others that you could probably come up with.

Competitive sports aren’t for everyone (Yoo hoo, that’s me!) and this is the perfect opportunity to say the famous “you do you.”

Always learning

The Farber boys are setting an excellent example for all those who are watching them, and we bet that there are quite a few fans out there. Just because you play one sport, it doesn’t mean you should stand still during the offseason. Whether it’s training for the sport you are currently focusing on or you are dabbling in another form of exercise, it’s always a win-win because nobody ever regrets a workout or a friendly game of ______ (choose your “sport du jour” here)

At first, I thought that the boys play tennis as a “break” during the snowboard season, I was sadly mistaken. Jennifer explains “They play tennis when they can’t snowboard… Tennis and snowboarding teach the Farber boys the most important lesson – the mental game. How to win and most importantly, how to lose.”
