Thank you, Kate Spade and a stranger. Last week, the kindness of a stranger and a Kate Spade purse saved my day. Yes, you read that right. Wait until you read about what happened to me at the Newark airport.
From where I am standing these days, I have decided that kind, generous and thoughtful people are an anomaly in our world. I have also decided that I can’t believe how a designer purse could create such an impact on someone’s day regardless of the beauty and craftsmanship of their product.
A couple of weeks ago, I attended a wedding in New Jersey. It was in the middle of the week and my husband couldn’t get away, so I decided to go solo. Which, I really didn’t mind, as it’s two days alone in a hotel room. Hello lovely room service and amenities, stretching out in the nice big bed and control over the remote control.
Off to the airport I went at the crack of dawn, and arriving at the Newark airport with plenty of time for a cup of happiness (coffee) and something to eat at one of those airport coffee shops where I sat in a corner, checking my emails. Happy as can be as I was in no rush to get to my hotel.
As I took my last sip and bite…
I gathered my things and headed to the entrance of the airport so I could call my Uber to drive me to the hotel. For some reason, my app was not working, so I sat on a nearby bench to try and fix the situation.
Looking back at the moment, I was THRILLED that my Uber app was not working, and I was taking a while to figure out why.
While I was immersed with my device, someone called my name.
“Sharon?”
“Yes, that’s me.” I answered as I quickly sprang my head from my phone. Thoughts swooshed through my mind, thinking the worst. Why did this stranger know my name? Am I in trouble? What was going to happen to me?
“Do you own a Kate Spade Wallet?” He asked.
“Um. YES!” I answered, feeling a little less frighted, yet still on edge.
“You left it at my coffee shop.”
Well, it was about here that my heart jumped into my throat. How could this be? I screamed in my head so loud, I’m sure my soul crashed like a champagne glass.
“What.. how.. why?” I blurted out. My eyes swelling up with tears, feeling ashamed for my carelessness.
“Finding you was easy – I just saw your Kate Spade bag and matched it to your wallet.” The coffee shop owner laughed to himself as I tried to spiritually message the great Kate Spade spirit to thank her. May her memory be a blessing.
Thank You
The man motioned for me to follow him and together, we walked back into the airport and to his coffee shop where my wallet was waiting for me on his counter. It seemed as if I had left it on the table where I was having my cup of java and a customer brought it to the cash register.
This lovely human being who’s feet I wanted to kiss was still sitting in the corner of the coffee shop. I looked at her and she smiled at me. I thanked her profusely while she just shrugged her shoulders and said you’re welcome. As if it was no big deal – like passing a shaker of salt.
My face fell from fatigue, as all I have seen lately is hate upon hate. With no warmth from strangers in sight. And here it was, staring right at me. Making me beam with joy for the rest of the day.
Yes, it may be cold out there, but there are some wonderful people who are here to help you. And when you find them, it’s like winning the lottery.
Thank you, Kate Spade and a stranger.
