Truth be told, I have never met the dear and diligent Dietitian Jaime Slavin (@jaimeslavin) in person. However, I believe that due to the positive power of social media, and email correspondence, the title of this blog is well deserved.
Let me be more specific.
- Jaime’s social media posts are all about food, family, friends, and love. Not to mention the applause and appreciation of the things that I post. And vice versa.
- What Jaime shares in an interview. Who she authentically is – and what she stands for, with purpose. And why.
- The quote Jaime chooses to tell her teenage self. It is such a bold, thought-provoking statement that really makes you think, but not that hard. š
Thank you, Lisa Borden (@BordenCommunications) for introducing me to the dear and diligent Dietitian Jaime Slavin, who is one of the mentors in the book Get Up.
Let’s dive in!
Who is Jaime Slavin?
Jaime Slavin is a Toronto living and loving Registered Dietitian. When I asked my 4 and half year old son “who is Jaime Slavin?” he said, “it’s you!” On that note, it’s me! A mom, dietitian, friend, sister, daughter, wife, health advocate, wellness educator, and lover of things calming, inspiring, and thought-provoking.
What lead you to your path of becoming an R.D.?
When I was 13 years old I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis (an inflammatory bowel disease). Even at that young age, I realized the importance and interconnectedness of food and nutrition and our overall well-being. I started to feel better when I started eating better. This was a huge influence on why I started to pursue the path of being a Registered Dietitian.
What has been the most meaningful lesson you have learned so far in your career? Home life?
In my career, the most meaningful lesson that I have learned is that everyone has a story. We are all dealing with something, and we all just want to be heard and supported. The most meaningful lesson that I have learned in my home life, as a mom of a very sensitive and strong-willed four-and-a-half-year-old, is that I am still learning the lessons, but learning to trust my gut will be my greatest guide as a mother.
What’s in your pantry? Fridge? Freezer? Any junk at all? (Lol)
In my pantry: lots of different whole grains- rice, quinoa, millet, spelt, and kamut pasta. Canned beans, dried lentils, jars of tomato sauce, canned and jarred sardines, tuna, salmon, and a variety of dark chocolate.
In my fridge:Ā Lots of veggies (wish my son ate more of them, but that’s a whole other topic!). A container of hummus, eggs (when I am able, a bunch of them are hard-boiled), and seeds (hemp, sunflower, and pumpkin. Note: they should all be stored in the fridge to keep them fresh). Coconut milk kefir, sheep’s milk yogurt, tofu, tempeh, and fruit. (I am enjoying a lot of grapefruit and kiwi these days) There is also usually an organicĀ rotisserie chicken because it’s easy to turn into any sort of meal.
In my freezer: Lots of frozen fruit. (berries galore!) Sourdough, spelt, kamut, rice, and buckwheat bread that I freeze and toast when needed. Chicken broth, chicken fingers for my son, and always some sort of coconut milk ice cream.
How do you respond to people when they ask you about the latest fad diet?
Fad diets are exactly that. They’re a fad. They come and go and are not sustainable and will make you crazier than healthy or happy.
How do you relax?
I LOVE reflexology or reiki. Both get me into a deeply restorative state. I used to do more restorative yoga, which is deeply relaxing and healing, andĀ I would love to get back into that.Ā When I need to unwind at the end of the day, I rest my legs on the wall or lay on an acupressure mat. This is such an easy way to relax at home and it feels fantastic.
Let’s unpack your quote. What did you mean by:
“Do not overthink what others think.”
I used to spend way too much time thinking about others’ thoughts and opinions of me, or if I did something to upset them (hello people pleasing!). Then it (finally!) dawned on me, life is too short and too precious to waste time on things that are out of my control, such as someone else’s thoughts!
Dear and diligent Dietitian, Jaime Slavin, it has been such a pleasure to peek inside your world and learn about all things food, family, and love. What you share on social media (and with me!) really speaks to what you are all about. It is such a gift to have your name and advice in the book Get Up and I am extremely grateful for it.
