Why Is Water So Wonderful?

Why is water so wonderful? Why do you have to drink it so often? What does it do for your body and why can’t you just have a Diet Coke Instead?

These are the questions I asked myself years ago and it took me a while until I fully understood the benefits of water. This realization and, if you want to call it – my “aha moment” didn’t happen overnight.

On another topic, I’d like to know what does happen overnight.

Anywhoo, as I type this – I can’t go a day without my 10 glasses of water. That’s about 2.5 liters. And if I am missing out on drinking my water- ooooh weee – does my body yell at me.

What happens when I don’t drink water?

I’ll spare you the gory details. Here are the top three side effects I get from turning my back on the idea of why water is so wonderful.

I get a headache. Why? When you are dehydrated, the brain can temporarily shrink from fluid loss. I don’t know about you – but a shrinking brain hurts like hell.

I can’t poop. As TMI as this is, I couldn’t let this one go. Oh, relax – everybody poops – and when you don’t it’s not fun, right? 🙂 How does water help in this department? When you drink water, it travels down to your gut and helps soften stools to make it pass easily.

I don’t move well. As I’m getting older, my joints need as much support as possible. Water in my body helps my body move well and more efficiently. Lifting weights (A must!), running, walking, and chasing a police officer before I get a parking ticket all are more efficient when I consume enough water.

I know I said three – but here’s one more.

I can’t write! If I have a headache, I can’t go to the bathroom and I don’t move well – nothing gets written. Talk about writer’s block.

Why is water so wonderful? Those are my 3 +1 reasons why.

But what if you don’t like to drink water?

Oh, honey, I hear you. You know what? I don’t like to drink water either. Whaaat? But I just went on and on with my 3 +1 reasons why. Hold the line, my lovie – let me explain.

On its own, water is super duper boring.

Here’s how I do It

In the morning, before ANYTHING. I have 1/2 a litre of warm water with lemon. It’s so refreshing and soothing. You know how I love my coffee, but first thing in the morning – no thank you. Nothing soothes my soul, wakes me up, and cleans out the toxins better than warm water with lemon.

Then I fill my 1 litre bottle with a scoop of Age Quencher Electrolyte. It tastes like lemonade and has a range of amazing health benefits.

In the afternoon and before bed, I have about 4 cups (1 litre) of herbal tea.

If you are as strong in math as I am :), all that liquid, adds up to about 2.5 litres.

What about that Diet Coke from the top paragraph. Turns out, it can count as part of your daily water consumption, but I wouldn’t make this a habit, due to the long list of ingredients that I don’t know how to pronounce. An explanation on that subject can be found here.

How do I know how much water to drink?

You have probably heard the 8 glass a day ritual, and I think that’s a great place to start. I was going to google the answer, but then I thought you could google that yourself.

How did I get to 2.5 liters?

It feels right. 3 litres was too much. 2 litres was not enough. There are days when I only drink 8 glasses and there are days where I drink 3 litres. I’m all over the place, but one thing for sure. I listen to my body and pay attention to how I feel.

Why is water so wonderful? Water keeps me functioning mentally, emotionally, and physically. I work better, exercise more efficiently, and don’t want to murder my family as much. Geez – I should really be careful about sharing too much information with you all.
