The Best Way to Sneak in Exercise

What is the best way to sneak in exercise? We all want to exercise, but we are so busy and can’t can’t find the time. How exactly can you “sneak it in?”

Here’s a hint – It may have to do with laundry, walking to the corner store or getting up from your desk to stretch, right in the middle of your day.

Is there a way?

The best way to sneak in exercise is through a concept called Exercise Snacks, and it has nothing to do with milk and cookies.

What the heck is it?

Let’s say you are right in the middle of editing a paper. Writing a book (that would be me). Working on a presentation. All you have to do is you get up from your chair, that you have been sitting in for the past (I’m afraid to ask how many hours) and exercise for a few minutes or so.

Exercise Snacking requirements

  • Comfortable clothes that you can move in.
  • Discipline, and the desire to improve your fitness level.
  • Your own body weight.
  • An area to move around in. It doesn’t have to be huge.

Before you know it, you will be creating your own personal workout session that will challenge you and will help you age well.

But why?

Why should you participate in Exercise Snacks when you already go for your daily run, walk, or attend your online exercise class. You’re doing just fine.

True, but…

Even if you take that hour to exercise, you are probably going to be sitting for the rest of the day, right?

I have learned how to properly practice Exercise Snacking from The Wellness Intelligence Collective (otherwise known as TWIC).

TWIC is a social media platform that is a wealth of information about all things health related. It’s safe, informative and fun.

Lisa Borden, from Borden Communications explains The Wellness Intelligence best:

“Wellness Intelligence creates the conditions for you to feel better in all eight dimensions of wellness … physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, intellectual, social, environmental, and financial. And, it’s not about doing more things, it’s about doing better things … on your own terms.”

If you get up every hour, to perform an exercise snack, you will get this very long list of benefits:

  • Boost energy & metabolism
  • Increase mental energy
  • Keep you disciplined to finish the job that you’re working on
  • Help manage stress, anxiety, and depression
  • Improve the quality of sleep
  • Raise self-esteem and confidence
  • Boost immune system
  • Help burn fat and calories
  • Strengthen heart and lungs
  • Feel fantastic!

A Few of My Favs

Here’s a list of a few of my favourites that I aim to do on a daily basis, in between work. Fun fact: I do the strength training ones on the way back from a pee-break! 🙂

  • Walking to the corner store to buy a missed ingredient for a dish.
  • Laundry – This is what I was talking about! Climbing up and down those stairs after each load.
  • Push-ups & planks.
  • Hip Exercises.
  • Stretching and meditating after a workout. (This is a hard one for me, but it’s a work in progress)

Stack your favourite daily activities throughout the day and voila! You’ve created your own personal workout. This is the best way to sneak in exercise!
