Ladies and gentlemen, I am here to tell you about my epic fail. Where did it happen? In the kitchen. When? Last week. What was it for? Dinner and I think it was the worst dish I ever made. In my life.
Let’s face it. We all love to learn about other people’s train wrecks, so here’s mine, and I’m sure you are dying to know how it all happened.
Let’s Get One Thing Clear
I really love food. Food is the bomb.com. Because I love food so much, and it’s so important to nourish our bodies with nutritious yummy meals and snacks. Why? People, we have work to do! Homework to complete, presentations to present, and jobs to show up for. Plus, we have to move our bodies! Especially now. We can’t do that on empty calories from sugar-infested coffees from you know where. I know you know.
We need great recipes that are super easy and super yummy too. And I am here to share them with you. Although, sometimes, they don’t work out. Hence, my epic fail.
Good Intentions
Yes, I had this feeling. Big time. I was so excited to jump in, out of my comfort zone, and create this vegan lasagna masterpiece from @thugkitchen101. I have to admit that the recipe looked intimidating, but heck, or &%$# it. Why not give it a go? What is the worst that can happen?
On a side note, the cookbook is hilarious. If you can’t read these recipes without a giggle, we can’t be friends.
Something Smells Funny
As I was placing the sunflower seeds in my blender to make the tofu ricotta, something didn’t smell right. What do I do? Say _____ (you know what to do) it and carry on. A habit that I am not proud of. And this time, I paid for it.
Did you know that nuts and seeds go rancid very quickly?
I don’t remember the last time I bought the seeds that I used. Hello there, red flag!
My Epic Fail
Once I had all the ingredients ready for layering, I began the satisfying process of making the lasagna. It looked great raw and I was so proud of what I created, but I still had a twinge of uncertainty about the sunflower seeds in the tofu ricotta. Nevertheless, I put the finished product in the fridge overnight so I could bake it the next day. This twinge of fear also led me to purchase an “emergency lasagna” from Bologna Pastificio. Yeah, I know.
The next day, the house smelled like an Italian restaurant. I was so excited to devour the fruits of my labour. Maybe it was the Bologna Pastificio lasagna that smelled so good?
First Bites
The first bites quickly became the last. It actually smelled and tasted like PAINT. Spoiled nuts and seeds release an odour that is similar to wet cardboard, varnish, Play-doh, and paint. I put my fork down and made a slice of toast and cottage cheese for dinner. The rest of my family devoured the store-bought lasagna and salad that I made with this dressing.
Lessons learned
- All nuts and seeds will now have a bought date on the package.
- Administer the smell and taste test before pouring into a recipe!
- It’s OK to fail.
