I am obsessed with coffee and I OK with that. I know I am not alone in this intense appreciation of the best hot drink in the world. Especially when it comes to writers – we have a thing about this popular beverage.
Ever since I was little, I remember the delicious, warm aroma that would fill my kitchen in the mornings. I tell you, the first sip of the day brings me nothing but happiness.
I am always researching where to find the best coffee and how to prepare it. I still love to pick up a cup of Joe at places such as @the_mad_bean, and of course Starbucks, but brewing my own at home has become more of a ritual.
One thing I’ve learned over the years? How to make the best java requires a few essential steps.
Let’s Talk About the Beans
At the present time, my favourites are @kickinghorsecoffee, I tend to reach for the “Grizzly Claw”. How Canadian can you get, right? Talk about bold, crisp yet delicious chocolate flavour. @demellocoffee is just a few blocks away from where I live, and besides the fact that the coffee shop is sprawling with Kennedy news clippings (Is that a sign?). They make the best Cappuccinos I have ever tasted. I recently got word that they sell their own line of beans. I had to try their dark roast, which is called “Dead Man Walking”. Another favourite of mine is from the @kurtiscoffeeshop where they deliver their scrumptious coffee beans right to your front door..
Once you have your coffee beans, it’s up to you how you want to store them. Don’t put them in your freezer or refrigerator as it says here. Once I open the bag, I make sure the bag is sealed properly and then store it in a room temperature area, like my pantry.
To Grind or not Grind?
Some people swear by grinding the beans just before they put them into their coffee maker. Call me lazy, but I say “Meh.” I think it all depends on your taste buds and what you prefer, just as some folks like their coffee black, while I love a splash of oat milk in mine. For more on the decision of grinding or not, it’s really up to your taste.
I tend to buy my beans already ground, but I make sure to use the ground beans within a week, and that my friends, is what usually happens in my house, as my husband and I have raised three coffee drinkers.

The Machine
The piece de resistance! (The main event) The coffee machine! So here’s mine. Isn’t she a beauty? I think there’s a drop left from this morning’s brew.

I just couldn’t help myself. Not only is she stunning and adorable, but it serves the best cup of coffee. Every time I greet this beautiful machine in the morning, it makes me smile. And yes, I say I love you to my cup.
Taking Care of the Coffee Machine
You just can’t stare at the pretty coffee machine and expect it to do its thing just like that. You need to take care of this beautiful piece of machinery that brings you your cup of joy each morning, or else your coffee will end up tasting like, well, you know.
Pay attention to the automated signals your coffee machine gives you, which means picking up the manual (or googling the problem) and following the directions to execute the maintenance that is required. I know, I know, it’s work, but it’s worth it. Most importantly, I advise you to rinse with this recipe at least each month.
I am obsessed with coffee and I OK with that so, taking the time to find the beans I love and how I brew them, makes such a difference. There’s nothing more exciting than waking up each day and saying “I can’t wait to brew my coffee!”
