It’s hard to believe that during this time, I can attest that my winter vacation was actually fun. How could this be without holiday parties or family gatherings? I even skipped my annual escape from the cold weather! I couldn’t believe it, but, not only did I have a blast these past two weeks, but I experienced a way of life that was new and exciting and something that I want to continue to do.
Before I begin, I don’t have to tell you about all the restrictions that we are experiencing due to COVID-19. They are different everywhere, but where I live, all social interactions should be done outside, two meters apart and proper precautions need to be administered if you are living in a shared space. Check out the rules in your neck of the woods and ask your doctor. We did. We also made sure that we were all on the same page. Crucial for a collaboration of any kind.
Off we went down the 401 to a cottage in Quebec, with my family. Due to the fact that both my boys are away at university, two weeks before we left, we all quarantined, took the COVID test, and then we “bubbled” together.
It amazes me how much I learned on this trip.
Sharing the Work
When you cohabit with others, it takes a lot of preparation and teamwork for the venture to go smoothly. Everyone brings their own luggage to the table. Filled with different personalities, along with strengths and weaknesses. Before we left, my son and I, the head chefs, had a two and a half hour (yes, you read that right and I couldn’t believe we were still talking after the two-hour mark) meeting to discuss what we were going to bring, prep, and make ahead.
Once we arrived, the work didn’t stop there, as we all shared the daily chores. The more we worked together, the quicker we got to go outside, which is what vacations are all about. Especially when it’s a winter vacation and the snow and breathtaking fresh air is calling your name.
Getting Outside
The cottage that we stayed in was extremely cozy. I mean really cozy. Like, why would you leave this place cozy? And it’s winter! Why would you go outside when you can stay all nice and warm inside? As far as getting my daily exercise, I had my laptop with a whole slew of classes to choose from. Why bother walking through that front door and leaving that toasty roaring fire?
Oh boy. I’ll tell you why you should bother. And this is coming from this Florida princess. Hey, I’m just being honest. When dressed properly, there is no better way to spend your winter than spending time outside. When I was out there, all of my senses were bursting with vigor and I was giddy with joy. I didn’t want to escape the beautiful, crisp fresh air.
Especially when I went snowshoeing.
At about halfway into our trip, I decided that my vacation was becoming a complete eye-opener. Until I went for a walk outside with my daughter @liv.arbess.
On this day, the sun shone so brightly, and with the reflection on the snow, it was hard for us to open our eyes. You know what? It was ok. It just allowed our other 4 senses to take the stage.
Oat Milk
As for the little things that can make a huge difference, who would have thought that oat milk in my morning coffee would make me sing “Happiness“? I love finding out new and healthier foods to consume. Just before I left, I went for a walk with a friend and she told me about an alternative to using dairy in my coffee, with this delicious oat milk that she uses. I decided to buy it for the trip and well, I was hooked. Oat milk is high in fiber, contains B vitamins, folate, and is cholesterol-free. Most importantly, it has a lovely sweet taste that brings out the flavour of my coffee. I particularly am using @minorfiguresmalang. It’s really yummy.
I can attest and I am sure you will agree that my winter vacation was actually fun! And I can’t believe I’m saying this, but it was such a refreshing change from Florida that I might even do it again next year, or sooner! Hello, March Break idea! As I mentioned before, this pandemic totally sucks and is a slap in the face for so many. However, if you look closely, there are silver linings. You just have to look for them, even with your eyes closed.
