The Best Berry Crisp

This is the best berry crisp! It’s my go-to dessert when I don’t have a lot of time, or when I don’t feel like baking. When I’m feeling generally lazy in the kitchen or when I am ordering take-out and say “might as well make a home-made dessert!” Just to put in that little effort.

Okay, this is me all the time. We all know that I suck at baking. I cannot tell a lie. I am what I am and would rather spend time doing stuff like this.

But really, this recipe for the best berry crisp is simple and easy. If it’s easy for me, then most of you will be able to do this blindfolded. Most importantly, it tastes delicious and when devoured, I and my socially distant guests say “mmmmmm.” when we eat it.

I originally found a similar recipe from the late @norene_gilletz. She calls her version Jumbleberry Crisp. It includes apples and other fruits, but I like to stick to berries. I have heard that as long as you change three or more ingredients, you can call a recipe your own.

Just follow this recipe for the best berry crisp. It’s idiot-proof simple and oh so very yummy.

Berry Crisp Recipe

Filling:

  • 4 cups of any frozen berries.
  • 1/3 cup of flour
  • 1/3 cup of sugar (white or brown)
  • 1 tsp cinnamon.

Topping:

  • 1/3 cup of brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup flour
  • 3/4 cup quick-cooking oats
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup canola oil
  • Sliced almonds (optional)

Combine the topping into a greased baking dish that would fit all of the ingredients. Mix all of the topping ingredients and sprinkle over the filling.

Here is a little cooking tip that put a satisfied smile on my face: During the summer, while strawberries were in season, I went a little overboard and bought too many. Just before they went bad, I cleaned, hulled, and sliced them and put them in my freezer so I could use them for this recipe. It’s the little things…

After you prepare the crisp, you have the option of putting it in the freezer (covered with foil or plastic wrap) and then taking it out when you need it, or you can bake it right away at 375 for about 45 minutes. You’ll know when it’s ready. Taste it. If you go “Mmmmm” it’s ready.

Thank you @thecozyapron for your beautiful photo of your berry crisp. I forgot to take a picture of mine. It got eaten too quickly!
