When I was a little girl, and I saw my grandmother’s delicious date cake on the counter, I was ecstatic! Firstly, it was my favourite cake of all time. It was moist yet dense from the dates and it had just the right amount of sweetness, thanks to the special topping.

During the Jewish High Holy Days of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, we tend to eat sweet foods in order to hope for, you guessed it – a sweet year. We dip everything we can get our hands on into honey. Apples, challah and we even marinate our chicken in it, too. At least I did. It was very good, by the way.
Most people bake a honey cake, but I love my grandmother’s delicious date cake, so when my grandmother passed away, I knew that I wanted to carry on the tradition of baking her very famous date cake each Jewish New Year.
And so I do. Each year I post it on Facebook because I am so proud of myself, because really, as I have mentioned before, I am NOT a baker by any means. It is a miracle when I make things like this.
People always Ooooh and Ahhh over this date cake. Especially after they taste it! They even ask me for the recipe, but I forget to post it. Or simply give the recipe to them.
Not today. Ladies and gentlemen, children of all ages. Here is the official recipe of my Grandmother’s delicious date cake. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
Date Cake Recipe

- 1 TSP baking powder
TOPPING:
- 1/2 cup of chocolate chips
- 1/4 cup of each brown sugar, and white sugar

Blend together. Pour batter into a greased cake pan of choice.
Bake for about 30 minutes.
Take out the cake. In another bowl, take the brown sugar, sugar and chocolate chips and mix together. Sprinkle this mixture on top of the cake and put it back in the oven for about 10 minutes.
Enjoy!
