Exercise – it’s better together!

Exercise – it’s better together!

Before you read on – If you are one of those people who lace up your shoes and are able to get your sweat on, all on your own  – yay you! Go ahead, you can skip this whole blog!

But then there’s the rest of us.
Who needs a little push, maybe from a friend.

It’s gotta get done.

I have written my fair share of exercise blogs. Stories from where to begin, to planking, and tennis. Where to exercise and who to turn to for coaching.  That’s all very nice and good, but the question is, how do you want to exercise?

Exercise, no matter what activity must be a part of your life in some way. It must get done, just like taking care of your teeth by brushing and flossing daily. You need to find a way to do it. How? Sign up for a team. Show up for a sport. Pick any activity you enjoy because that way, it will be easier to stick to it. If this method works – great! But if not, you may have to turn to a friend to help you get started.

Why exercise with a friend?

It makes it more fun! What’s better than good conversation while jogging or speed walking? Just make sure to take some breaks from talking in order to challenge your heart rate. How do you know if you are being physically challenged? You should be struggling to speak, with only a few words per sentence. For more running tips with friends check out this article.

Accountability! Greater chance of sticking with a plan, or goal. Before you begin your exercise routine, or sports activity, sit down together, and write down some goals by answering these questions:

  • Why are you exercising?
  • What do you want to achieve?
  • How often should you meet?
  • What is a “good excuse” to cancel?

Then make your schedule. Write it down. Type it in. These will be appointments that you need to treat as an “important meeting” for your body and your mental health.

It keeps you motivated! There is nothing like a friend that will keep you going. Even when your legs feel like Jello. Even better? When that friend wears a watch and says “In 10 minutes – just 10 minutes we will be done and then we will feel fantastic.”

It’s safer! What happens if you fall? What happens if a barbell falls on your foot? I could go on, but there is no need to because you get the picture. It’s always great to have a friend with you in the emergency room. 😉

There you have it. Four fabulous reasons why you should exercise with a friend.

What to do now? Grab your buddy and make a plan! No excuses – that’s another post to come soon!
