“Love that ride!” is what I say as I absorb the sweat from my towel after an indoor cycling class with @DavidNewtonwellness. The awesome music he plays. His motivation. In his classes, I really exert myself.
I first met David at @mayfairclubs many moons ago when the sport of indoor cycling first became popular in Canada. These days, David continues to teach indoor cycling and has recently taken his classes outside, in order to follow the required precautions for COVID-19.
An Unconventional Idealist. Co-creator of the Akira Concept Inc., Immersive Wellness Solutions. David is a part of a movement that changes the way the world exercises. I know that I am not alone when I say “Love that ride!” after each indoor cycling class or any exercise that is lead by David.
Editor’s note: Usually when we describe indoor cycling, we call it “Spinning”. This term is a registered trademark, that I will not be using.
I recently had the opportunity to ask David a few questions about indoor cycling. You will see why his clients would say “Love that ride!”
How long have you been teaching indoor cycling for?
It’s been over 25 years since I have been instructing Indoor cycling classes! Would you believe that I was one of the first certified indoor cycling instructors in Canada? I was also a Canadian director of education for Schwinn and was part of an international committee that developed their certification. Creating unique classes that my clients will enjoy is something that I strive to do each time I teach.
Why is Indoor cycling good for you?
It is a great non-impact form of cardiovascular conditioning that incorporates a variety of speed, power, and endurance.
How many times a week should someone spin?
Variety is key. Training three times weekly would be sufficient for the average fitness enthusiast. It is also a great off-season training tool for triathletes and road cyclists because it gives them more opportunities to train on the bike.
Would you recommend double classes?
Double classes are great if you are training to do long-distance cycling (for example, cycling across the province or the country). Attending two classes in a row in the hope to lose weight is a recipe for disaster. What will likely happen is that the second class will result in being less efficient from fatigue, which will lead to less calories burned. More frequent shorter intense workouts will be much more effective at fat calorie burn than longer less efficient workouts. You can learn more about efficient exercise here.
How many different types of Indoor cycling are there?
- Strength (hills)
- Speed (fast flats)
- Endurance (long slow distance)
- HIIT (high-intensity intervals)
- All terrains (aa combination of the above)
- Tabata (anaerobic training)
- Intervals (combo of the above)
You can’t get bored with all of these options!
During COVID, what did you do as a replacement for Indoor Cycling?
I did Off-Road-Speed-Play, a program I developed with @lisaborden for @TheAkiraConcept. It is an off-road all-terrain walk/run program that can offer complete conditioning.
Where do you see the future of indoor cycling going?
Indoor cycling has been around for decades and has evolved outside of gyms. In the past, the bike was more of clothes hanger in the bedroom than a piece of fitness equipment. Today, with massive public appeal of group indoor cycling classes, I believe it has great longevity. However, the set up of the studios will have to respect social distancing. Covid has caused the upstart of the “outdoor” indoor cycling class and an explosion of the “virtual” indoor class.
Indoor cycling is a fantastic exercise for all fitness levels, especially when combined with other activities. Life may change and turn your world upside down, but as David continuously preaches
“Don’t abandon your ride!”
I couldn’t agree more.
