Why do the plank and what the heck is it?
Out of all the exercises I write about, I think the majority of them are about moving your body in any way that makes you happy. Running, walking, dancing, and even where to begin your journey. We all know that any cardiovascular exercise is fantastic for your heart, your muscles, and most importantly your mood. But…
Now I’m asking you to be as still as ever while you practice the plank.
Time to call in the experts to tackle the topics that I am not qualified to answer!
Introducing Felicia Laba Taub @feliciataub. Master Trainer, Personal Trainer, Group Fitness Instructor, Life Coach, and Sales Supervisor at the @prossermanjcc. Whew! Do you think she’s qualified to talk about planking? Maybe just a little bit.
PLANKS WELL WITH OTHERS Written by Felicia Laba Taub
I do plank well with others especially when it’s one of my kids. I love to teach basic movements that people can do without equipment and essentially anywhere.
Planks are suitable for the novice exerciser to the advanced athlete. Planks are a simple but effective core exercise that helps you build strength and stability throughout your entire body.
How to properly perform the plank:
- Start in the pushup position. Legs straight.
- Keep your palms are under your shoulders. You can also rest on your elbows.
- Keep still! For as long as you are able.
The plank is an isometric core exercise. This means your muscles are activated and contracted while you are in a static position. Here is why you should implement this into your routine.
Planks are one of the best core exercises: Strengthens the abdominals, back, shoulder, and erector spinae (the deep muscles in the back), and the upper back.
Planks improve your posture: Good posture keeps your bones aligned.
You will become better coordinated. The body uses core muscles for balance.
You will decrease your risk of a back injury. A strong back = fewer of “Oooh – my aching back”
You will experience positive mental health: Planks have an effect on the nerves making them an excellent means of increasing overall mood, they stretch out muscle groups that contribute to stress and tension in the body.
Here’s to strengthening your body, one plank at a time.
