Welcome to @amys.sweettreats where 16-year-old Amy Werger is baking everything from cakes to cookies for cancer research. She is helping to find cures, one bite at a time
At this very moment, Amy was supposed to be at her favourite place in the world, @camp.arowhon in Algonquin Park, Ontario.
Like thousands of other kids across North America, she had to decide on a summer activity before school resumed in September. Oh, did Amy choose a goodie! As usual, we got all the scoop here!
How did you react when you found out camp was canceled?
I was devastated! This would have been my 9th summer and I seriously can’t remember a summer without camp. @camp.arowhon is my home away from home and is something I look forward to all year. My cabin was extremely upset and to commemorate camp being canceled we all met up in a park (social distancing of course) and told camp stories to remember all of the amazing times we had together.
How and why did you come up with a “Plan B” — your bakery business?
I’ve wanted to start my own baking business for a while but I never seemed to have enough time! Once things started to close down, I thought it would be the perfect time to begin, and it was! I then realized that this baking business could solve a whole bunch of issues.
- Something fun to do with my free time.
- A way to practice my baking skills.
- A way to connect and bring joy to people.
- Donate to a good cause.
Why did you decide to donate ALL of your profit (that’s a really big deal)! to The Princess Margaret Foundation? @thepmcf
Volunteering and charity work is something I enjoy and I love the feeling of giving back to those who need it. I also felt that I didn’t need to be compensated because I really enjoy baking.
Choosing the charity was a challenge. Crohn’s and Colitis Canada was suggested due to the fact that I was recently diagnosed with the disease; however, I wanted something that more people could relate to.
Unfortunately, there are too many who have suffered from cancer, including my great aunt Judy, who recently passed away from the disease. She is the one who introduced me to baking and she not only loved to bake but also loved the feeling of having her baked goods bring everyone together. I feel the exact same way and in honour of her, and all of the other people I have known who have fought through cancer, I chose to donate to Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation as they are one of the world leaders in cancer research.
How many times a week do you bake?
I seem to be spending almost all of my free time in the kitchen and I love it! Whether it be making orders, testing, and experimenting with new recipes. I’m so glad that I am able to have something so fun and meaningful to do this summer – baking for cancer research!
How do you advertise?
My main form of advertisement is through Instagram which is now my main platform for all communication. I have recently also created a website, to help promote the business and show people in a more organized fashion the types of things they can order. Although, word of mouth also plays a huge role!
What do you do when you’re not baking?
When I’m not baking I really enjoy biking, swimming in my pool, working out, spending time with my family, and watching baking videos!
I bet, like everyone, you are feeling frustrated with our current situation. How do you release these emotions?
I find that working out really helps me to release all of the stress and frustration that comes from being stuck in my house all this time. I also find that baking helps me to relax as it is something I really enjoy and it’s a bonus that what I am baking raises funds for cancer research.
How can people get in touch with you so they can order your yummy goodies?
