I’m So Bored!

“I’m so bored!” may be a frequent saying in your house these days. We are all (hopefully) doing our part to #FlattenTheCurve during the #Covid19 pandemic by staying home, social distancing, and creating a new lifestyle for ourselves. This “New Normal” means that we have more time on our hands, and for some, it may lead to boredom.

Is that you walking up to where your laptop and Smartphone rest on your desk? Like most people, when bored, choose to watch a screen. They are the entertainers “De Jour”.

There’s just so much @Netflix and @TikTok you can watch. It may seem so innocent, but look out! These entertaining outlets are time absorbing monsters that can suck you in for hours at a time. To be honest, watching stuff on screens can be so much fun. It’s relaxing and decadent. I too am guilty of binge-watching from time to time.

What to do?

Try and put a time limit to your screen time. You may need some advice from a friend or, if you’re a middle school child, a parent or guardian. Ask yourself “Do I really want to watch other people’s lives for hours at a time?” and “Do I really need to watch the whole season or just a few episodes?”

Of course, there are dozens of brilliant books to read, puzzles to tackle, and new hobbies to look into. We hope you give these guys a try, however; the real issue here is that at some point during the day, you will be bored and that’s OK.

Believe it or not, being bored is good for you! But you have to do “boring” right and the way to do it is to daydream. Just sitting there, staring into space, allows for a “mental break” from the “stuff” you have to do each day.

Boredom’s brighter side

Boredom is also great for productivity. Scientists find that putting your mind in a relaxed mental state, allowing it to wander freely, is the best way to come up with the answers to complex problems. It’s where your creative juices really begin to stir.

So go ahead, sit there, daydream on anything you like – no one we know can read you mind so let it ‘rip. Try and see what you can come up with while your heads are in the clouds.
