I am so excited to tell you all about the books that I couldn’t book down! Want to know which ones I’ve chosen? Shut off that screen, and get ready to read! Oh, how I love typing those words! Whether you or your child is attending day camp, sleep-away camp, or camping outside in your backyard, there is always a time to read a great book this summer.
Reading with your flashlight while a mosquito is buzzing in your ears. Bringing your book to the swimming dock while you wait your turn. Sneaking in a few pages while you wait for dinner. It all brings back so many memories… sigh.
Don’t you love that feeling of “I just gotta find out what happens next!” and you sneak away and read a few pages, here and there? When you can grab a moment for yourself, it is such a cherished feeling.
Personally speaking, I adore biographies – especially Kennedy ones. I wrote all about it on @Brazenwoman here. I also love reading YA books which stand for Young Adult and according to The Atlantic (@theatlantic), I’m not the only one. Check out this article here.
That’s right – on many occasions, you may see me sneaking into my daughter’s room to borrow a book from her bookshelf.
Just recently, a friend asked me if I would recommend a book for her daughter who is in Grade 7. After I sent her my top 5 list, she suggested I write a blog about it – so here I am.
It’s the perfect time to share my favourite reads. Just in time for packing up those duffle bags, or to have a book ready for reading after a long day at day camp. I bet a lot of other parents would agree.
Books I Love
All links are from Goodreads, where I am a Goodreads author – follow me here!
- Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson. After an emotional incident, Melinda decides not to speak. To anyone. Lucky you. You get to get inside her head and really feel what she is going through while being in Grade 10.
- Star Girl by Jerri Spinelli. The simplest and unique story of a girl capturing the attention of a boy. Witness how she fights to be herself and not conform to the crowd.
- The Fault in Our Stars by John Green. The love story of two teenagers who fall in love while undergoing cancer treatment.
- The Cat Ate My Gymsuit by Paula Danziger. The trials and tribulations of Marcy. A teen who is struggling with her weight, among other things.
- Any Judy Blume book that was ever written. I can’t pick one. This woman is a genius and captures the reader like nobody’s business. Okay, if I had to pick a favourite, it would be Are You There God, It’s Me, Margaret, where the main character, Margaret is in the 6th grade and has just moved to a new town where lots of changes happen to her and her body. Now it’s a movie! But, please – read the book first!
And there’s one more – Say Yes by Lisa Borden (@LisaBorden). Read my thoughts about this bright, shiny, and inspiring read here.
Okaaaay.. and then there are two more. Hey, can you blame me?
