A New Way To Get Moving

Here’s a new way to get moving according to @remyabramson. It was only 6 months ago when I interviewed her and it was all about her love of hockey, how much she loved to push herself physically, and the joy of being a part of a team. It’s amazing what can change in such a little amount of time. Due to #COVID19 and the need to cancel all sporting events of any kind, Remy had to hang up her skates and choose a new way to “Get Moving”.

I wish I could say that we sat down in front of two cups of tea in our neighbourhood coffee shop, but that was not the case. Communication via Instagram DM/s and email messages was the way to go and it worked out just fine, just like how Remy is adjusting to her new life.

Tell me about yourself again. How old are you? Any siblings? Where do you go to school? What are your favourite things to eat and what is your favourite movie? Favourite book?

I’m 16 years old and attend @TheBishopStrachanSchool and am currently in Grade 11. I have an older sister who is 20, and goes to McGill. Fresh fruit is my go-to snack, and at the present time, there is not a favourite book that I can call upon; however, right now I am reading This Is How It Always Is by Laurie Frankel.

What are your hobbies? What do you do for fun?

I play competitive hockey and enjoy spending time with my family and friends going for walks or runs.

How did you exercise before COVID 19?

I played competitive hockey about 5 times a week between school hockey and recreational hockey. Also, I am taking a Grade 12 personal fitness course l, which I have about 2-3 times a week.

What is your form of exercise during COVID 19?

During COVID-19, I have been running with my dad and taking my dog, Brisket for walks daily. As well, I have been taking classes on Instagram with @barrebelleyyz and @fh_villagegym.

Do you have any physical goals – presently? Active things that you want to do?

My sister and I have set a goal to workout daily, but also to walk 5km a day.

Relaxation time looks like?

Usually, I find taking Brisket for a walk very relaxing. I also like to watch a show or movie with my family.

It’s so important to take time for yourself, how do you do it?

To take time for myself, I usually go for a run or a walk.

What is school like now?

All of my classes are currently online. We have a mixture of Asynchronous classes. This means working independently and then Synchronous classes which means signing in to a class through the Google Meet platform. We start classes at 8:45 and I have 3-4 classes a day, that last for 40 minutes until 12:15 PM. I enjoy this type of learning because we have a very organized schedule that leaves the afternoon open from 12:15-3:30. This time is designated to study and to complete any work we may have. To keep up with the workload, I keep a list of reminders with different tasks that I have to complete. I make sure to check this list daily.

It is totally normal to feel frustrated with our current situation. How do you release these emotions?

To release these emotions, I make sure to spend time outside. I find the fresh air helps with stress and anxiety during these uncertain times. It’s a new way to get moving.

Remy and her hockey team, just 6 months ago

A new way to get moving. Fresh air. A pair of running shoes. her dog. the love and support from family and friends. These are all Remy needs to be resilient to what’s happening in our world right now. It sounds like the perfect recipe to tackle any hurdle in life, really.
