Here is a super yummy & healthy tomato sauce that everyone will enjoy! All you need is some tomatoes and a few ingredients. The best part? It’s easy enough for you to do it!
Why Tomatoes?
Tomatoes are so versatile. You can enjoy them over pasta, in salsa with corn chips, over a baked potato or with your favourite salad. Is a tomato a vegetable or fruit? It doesn’t really matter – just enjoy them because they come in so many shapes and sizes for any type of recipe. Most importantly, they are filled with the antioxidant lycopene, which helps reduce the risk of heart disease and cancer. They are also a great source of vitamin C, potassium, folate, and vitamin K.
They are super sweet in the late summer months, which is just around the corner, so remember to grab them by the bushels and make this homemade tomato sauce that you can freeze and use all year.
Even though it’s the middle of March, you can still make this yummy & healthy tomato sauce – and it will still be amazing – with fresh or canned tomatoes. Thank you, @romcaz, Laurie David, and Kirstin Uhrenholdt for this delicious recipe
The Recipe
1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil
1 medium onion finely chopped
4 cloves of garlic, finely chopped
4 pounds of fresh tomatoes chopped or 2 28-ounce cans of crushed tomatoes
A few fresh basil leaves
1 teaspoon fresh or dried oregano chopped
Salt and pepper
Directions
Combine the olive oil, onions, and garlic in a medium pot. Heat up gently until the onions are translucent and garlic is fragrant. Stir in the remaining ingredients and heat to a gentle simmer. Simmer for about 30 minutes and taste for seasonings. If you want the sauce a little smoother throw it into a blender.
Now you have a simple tomato sauce for a quick dinner… and a bit for your freezer as well.
