How I love The Stranger Things! As far as I’m concerned, this is the best show on @Netflixca. Especially if you are looking for a program that you and your middle schooler can enjoy together.
”And yeah, sometimes it’s painful. And sometimes it’s sad. Sometimes it’s surprising. Happy. So, you know what? Keep on growing up, kid. Don’t let me stop you. Make mistakes, learn from them, and when life hurts you, because it will, remember the hurt. The hurt is good. It means you’re out of that cave.”
Hopper’s speech to Eleven from Netflix’s Stranger Things, Season 3.
When Stranger Things first aired on Netflix, my kids really urged me to watch it. “It’s from your era, Mom – the 80’s – you’ll love it!”
How I got hooked!
In most cases, If my kids ask me to watch or read anything, I listen and obey ASAP because it’s a free ticket, with a side order of buttered popcorn, to talk about things that may not come up in our everyday conversations.
And I’m all about talking about stuff from books and movies and relating them to our everyday lives. 😉
And they were right. Watching all of the clothes and toys from my youth – priceless! And don’t forget about the big flesh-eating monster thingy that wanted to gobble down everyone’s souls. That’s always a thrill, too. However, I especially appreciated Winona Ryder’s character, Joyce. Mom to mom – I could relate so well to her “mother bear” attitude. Nothing would stop her from saving her son in seasons 1 and 2.
It’s all about relationships
I really loved the relationship between police chief Hopper and the daughter he adopts, Eleven (El). That duo pulled on my heartstrings big time. After already losing a daughter to cancer, Hopper has a hard time communicating his feelings, especially when El and Mike are in her room with the door closed.
After doing the inevitable act of forbidding Mike and El to see each other, which we know never works, he reaches out to Joyce for advice.
Lots of things happen during the next few episodes, I will spare you all the details because you can watch it for yourselves and read the reviews and cool videos online. Besides, this blog isn’t a series review anyway.
The point is – Hopper got it.
After much reflection, he wrote it all down on paper and it’s beautiful. So beautiful, I think every parent should read it to their child. Heck, I’m even gonna print it out and post it on my fridge. It’s that good.
I especially love the last part:
“If you don’t mind, for the sake of your poor old dad, keep the door open three inches.”
And there you have it – it just doesn’t get better than that. How I love The Stranger Things! And you will too!
