Being Afraid

Being afraid in middle-school is totally normal. And then it isn’t. Let me explain the difference.

When it’s Normal

Things change when you get to middle school. The new pressures come out of nowhere! There is way more homework, after school commitments and juggling it all – don’t get us started! Don’t forget all of the “friend drama!” Where did all of this come from? You may be thinking to yourself how everyone got along so well last year. With all of these new obligations, stressors, and changes, fear and anxiety can explode like a volcano.

A full plate with all of these responsibilities and the stress that goes with it is perfectly normal and expected for these middle-schoolers, even though they may seem scary and daunting, especially for your child.

Being afraid and stressed is part of the course of life. They should be afraid if their homework isn’t done, or they had a fight with so and so and they don’t want to face them. It’s also perfectly fine to be afraid of that icy patch right near the monkey bars because the other day someone slipped on it while trying to do a backflip and fell. And it stung, really bad.

They could also be afraid of math class because the idea of finding X makes their stomach turn into knots. Being afraid of what the cafeteria will be serving for lunch is also totally acceptable because last week, someone found an ant in their salad.

When It’s Not Normal.

What kids should never be afraid of, ever, is the fear of losing their lives at school because of a stupid piece of metal that shoots holes in people. A Gun.

According to The Washington Post, Github.com There have been more than 230 school shootings in the United States since the devastating massacre at Columbine High School in 1999.

Thank you, @17msdangels for this beautiful photo of Jaime. She used to attend the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. May she R.I.P.
